InFlight200 Braniff 727 "End of the Plain Plane" 60th Anniversary Collection: Only 120 of Each Produced

Five iconic jellybean colors. Five Boeing 727s. 120 of each — worldwide, ever. The third installment in InFlight200's End of the Plain Plane anniversary series is here, and it may be the most collectible InFlight200 release in years.

The Campaign That Changed Aviation Forever

In 1965, Braniff International Airways did something no airline had ever attempted. Under the creative direction of advertising legend Mary Wells Lawrence, Braniff launched "The End of the Plain Plane" — a radical rebranding that painted its entire fleet in seven bold, solid colors. Orange. Turquoise. Blue. Lime green. Panagra green. Yellow. Beige. Overnight, the drab silver and white tubes of commercial aviation gave way to a fleet of flying jellybeans.

It was more than a marketing campaign — it was a cultural earthquake. Wells Lawrence didn't stop at the paint. She commissioned Alexander Girard to redesign the interiors, hired Emilio Pucci to create the flight attendant uniforms, and introduced the "air strip" — a theatrical boarding process where attendants would progressively remove layers of a Pucci-designed outfit during the flight. The whole program was so ahead of its time that it still influences airline branding six decades later.

The 60th Anniversary Series: End of the Plain Plane by InFlight200

To mark the 60th anniversary of this landmark moment in aviation history, InFlight200 partnered with Braniff International to produce the End of the Plain Plane (EOTPP) anniversary series. This third installment brings five Boeing 727 models in authentic jellybean liveries, each limited to an extremely small production run of just 120 units worldwide.

To put that number in perspective: a typical InFlight200 release might produce several hundred to over a thousand units. At 120 per model, these Braniff 727s represent one of the most limited InFlight200 production runs available to collectors today.

The Five Models

Braniff Boeing 727-162 N7282 — Orange (IF721BN0426)

The orange 727-162 is arguably the single most recognizable aircraft in the jellybean fleet. It's the color that appeared in almost every Braniff advertisement, the one that stopped people on the tarmac, and the one that collectors have been asking InFlight200 to produce for years. Registration N7282, this is the 727-100 series variant — the shorter-fuselage original that Braniff operated on its domestic trunk routes.

The turquoise 727-27C captures the Caribbean energy that Braniff brought to its Latin American and South American routes. Registration N7270, this is the convertible cargo variant (727-27C) that gave Braniff operational flexibility — passenger service by day, freight by night. The color itself is a vivid tropical blue-green that photographs beautifully and stands out in any display case.

The "New Medium Blue" is a deeper, more sophisticated shade that was introduced in the second generation of the jellybean fleet. Registration N7272, this 727-27C wears a rich blue that sits between the turquoise and the traditional navy that other airlines were using at the time. It's the most "serious" color in the collection — and for many collectors, the most elegant.

Braniff Boeing 727-27C N7276 — Light Lime Green (IF721BN0726)

Nothing says 1960s American optimism quite like painting a 727 in lime green. Registration N7276, this is the color that most fully embodies the mod, pop-art spirit of the EOTPP campaign. Mary Wells Lawrence wanted colors that would make people stop and stare — and a lime green Boeing 727 taxiing across the tarmac at Dallas Love Field certainly accomplished that.

InFlight200 Braniff International Boeing 727-27C N7296 Panagra Green IF721BN0826 1:200 scale diecast model

The Panagra Green carries the deepest historical significance in the collection. Pan American-Grace Airways (Panagra) was the storied airline that Braniff acquired in 1967, inheriting its extensive South American route network. This deep forest green honors that merger heritage — it's the color of Braniff's expanded international ambitions. Registration N7296, this 727-27C is the darkest and most commanding model in the set.

What Makes This Release Special for Collectors

Several factors make the EOTPP 727 series stand out from typical InFlight200 releases:

Ultra-limited production. At 120 units per model, these are among the most limited InFlight200 releases available today. For context, when InFlight200 limits a release, secondary market values tend to climb quickly once allocation sells through.

Official Braniff International licensing. InFlight200 worked directly with Braniff International on the EOTPP anniversary program, ensuring authentic color matching, correct registration details, and period-accurate livery placement. This isn't a generic retro scheme — it's the real thing.

The 727 factor. The Boeing 727 is one of the most beloved aircraft in aviation history, and quality 1:200 scale 727 models are relatively uncommon compared to widebody releases. A set of five different 727s in this level of detail and at this production limit is a rare opportunity.

Complete-set collecting. With five models at 120 each, the maximum number of complete sets that can exist in the world is 120. Collectors who secure all five will own one of only 120 complete Braniff Jellybean 727 collections — ever.
