In 1996, the fighter squadron celebrated its 35th anniversary with a colorful special livery featuring a white horse - the heraldic animal of the state of North-Rhine Westphalia and the JG72.

On June 29th, a 40-year chapter of the German Air Force comes to an end: Fighter Wing 71, Germany's last remaining Phantom unit, will convert to the Eurofi ghter. For these celebrations, this F-4 has been painted in a special blue and gold metallic design, with the "Hartmann Tulip" around its nose and a "germanized" version of the Phantom mascot on the stabilizer.
