This is the first 1/200th scale Russian aircraft that I have added to my collection. NICE! Herpa is doing a good job with their releases ,especially when it comes to aircraft that have not been at the top of collector's wish lists. This jet though, is a popular 1/72 scale model, so it is nice to see it come out in a different scale.
Everything about this model is top notch. The paint and markings are nicely done, even including the Sharks Mouth motif, not under the nose but on the side of the air intakes. The wing surface is quite detailed but not over exaggerated with the lines. On the spine, they have even outlined the large speed brake just behind a communications aerial. On the underside, the workmanship continues to amaze me as they have included what I believe are two R-60 (AA-8 ''Aphid'') or R-73 (AA-11''Archer'') air to air missiles. The two weapons hung under the engine housing look like AA-10 ''Alamo'' medium range missiles. There are four hardpoints that have been left vacant. The gear is in the down position with nice detail on the front strut. They even included the stone guard behind the front wheel. Nice touch as most Russian military aircraft are equipped with the guard to prevent FOD from entering the intakes and damaging the engines. I also like that they have painted the wheel assembly green, a typical Russian touch. The last observation is back on the top of the jet. Herpa has included the option of an open or closed canopy by allowing you to use the separate included canopy. It fits securely and makes for a different way to display the model. Again, a nice touch for such a small model.
I can't say enough about how impressed I am with how the markings are applied. As minute as some of the applications are, even using a magnifying glass shows that even these details are as well done as the rest of the model is. WELL DONE.
