The McDonnell Douglas F-4 was the main multipurpose aircraft for the US Military for 20 years. The F-4E variant was an improved version of the C/D with an elongated nose and compact radar. These two things made it possible to install a 20mm M61A1 6 barrel 640 round Vulcan gun pod in the nose. The F-4E was the most produced variant with 1387 aircraft being made over its 12 year production period. The 'E' also equipped more air forces than any other variant of the Phantom II.

In November 1968 the F-4E made its first appearance in the Vietnam War when it joined the 469th TFS in Korat Thailand. The Commander of the 388th TFW, 13th Air Force was Colonel Paul Douglas who was a WWII P-47 ace with 8 victories flying the 'Arkansas Traveler'. In Vietnam F-4E 67-0288 "Arkansas Traveler II" became his personal aircraft and was adorned with the same 8 victory markings and nose art of a hillbilly riding a bomb that were on his P-47. During the Vietnam War the F-4E was credited with 21 MiG victories and 17 of these were by the 469th TFS.
