Douglas C-54/R5d Skymaster (1:144) by IXO Models
    Item Number: IXJ200813

The Douglas C-54 Skymaster was a four-engined transport aircraft used by the United States Army Air Forces in World War II. Like the C-47 Skytrain, the C-54 Skymaster was derived from a civilian airliner (the Douglas DC-4).

    Pros:
    Cons:
IXO has made the effort to produce models that most manufacturers are reluctant to attempt. These aircraft are from the World War II era that do not seem to be in as much demand as other airframes but yet have their place in aviation history. This model, however, had both a military as well as a civilian application. Following the famous DC-3, the C-54 was a successful large US airlifter that showed it's abilities during the latter part of World War II and continued on through times like the Berlin Airlift, the Korean War, and as a reliable airliner for many of the world's major airlines. I found upon opening the box that the model is mostly plastic with some metal in it's construction. The upper part of the fuselage is metal but that is about it.You'll find that the wings, engines, props, and landing gear are all plastic. There are very noticeable seams where the fuselage halves and the wings come together. The entire model has over exaggerated panel lines. Markings for the model found me questioning whether the ATC on the lower left wing is correct as my model has the ATC, looking at the bottom of the wing, as up side down. I don''t know much about this aircraft or it's time period, but it looks like a mistake too me. The props require tlc as you place on because the pins to connect the props are extremely small and fragile. Once they are on, I'm not sure it's a good idea to remove them as the pins look like they would break. They have painted on the de-icing boots on all the leading edges, which is a nice touch. The model comes with a stand to display in flying mode, but it sits quite nicely on it's gear, although the gear are fixed in the down position, so the flying mode is with the gear down. There is very little detail to the landing, but this can be expected given the scale, 1/144th. Over all, it is a nice piece, but it is not in the same league as a number of other manufacturers. They do offer pieces you can't find anywhere else such as the German Arado or the US Mariner flying boat, to name a few, but to consider other types such as the B-17 or the British Lancaster, one might want to consider other lines before you consider purchasing IXO's 1/144th line aircraft. I will say their World War II fighter aircraft of the 1/72 scale are very well done. I'd like to see their 1/144th scale models of the same quality. Just remember that affordability often times results in less quality. This is still a model that is nice to have although I wouldn't display it as one of my favorites.
