The Socit pour les Appareils Deperdussin was headed by Louis Bleriot in 1914. The first thing that he wanted was to alter the name of the company to Socit Pour Aviation et ses Derives but continuing the SPAD initials. He made the company be one of the leading manufacturers of fighter aircrafts in France and developed the company into one of the most famed aircraft producers in World War I.

Louis Bechereau and Marc Birkigt were the ones responsible for making the Spad VII. They designed the aircraft in 1916. The Hispano-Suiza engine was very dependable and quick. The French military that saw one of its flights were so impressed and because of this they ordered 268 right away. The Hispano-Suiza engine improved the first designs that usually experienced overheats. The Spad VII still tracked the tradition of the French military on single gunned fighters till the appearance of the Spad XIII in 1918 that France would lastly achieved a double gunned fighters after the British and the German Air Forces were using such fighter aircrafts.

The Spad XIII varies from the early versions by having an aerodynamics, as well as bigger wings and rudder and a more powerful Hispano-Suiza engine. For the weapons, the Spad VII was equipped with X1 Vickers machine gun while the Spad XIII was equipped with X2 machine guns. The adjustments made the aircraft into a greater fighter aircraft. The performance of the aircraft in combat was great. It was better and faster in other fighter aircrafts during its time like the Sopwith Camel and the Fokker D.VII. But its maneuverability was substandard particularly in low speeds. But some beginner pilots had some difficulty in landing the aircraft safely because of its poor gliding features.
