The British Horsa glider was considerably larger than the American Waco CG-4A. It could carry as many as 30 troops and a substantially larger supply load compared to the CG-4A's maximum load of 13 Glider Infantry troops.
As part of the 60th anniversary commemoration of D-Day last June 5, 2004. Prince Charles divulged a Horsa Glider replica at the site of the first landing in Pegasus Bridge. The Horsa Glider was designed under the specification of X.26/40 and was built from 1940 onwards. The Horsa Glider aircraft featured a high wing and was all wooden because of the shortage of material. The Glider was equipped with a tricycle undercarriage for take off.
The Horsa Glider was also used in the paratrooper landings at both Dday and Arnhem. The Airspeed Company received the specification of the Horsa Glider in December 1940. Five Horsa Gliders were built at Airspeecs Portsmouth factory and were used by the British Army during their trials. Some facts about the Horsa Glider were: its maximum speed is 150 mph, normal gliding speed is 100 mph and it has no armaments.
