F6 Lightning XR770 5 Squadron RAF Binbrook 1987 (1:72) by Corgi Diecast Aviation
Item Number: AA32311
The distinctive shape and unique 1950s Cold War styling of this 1:72 scale EE Lighting single-seat series has made it one of Corgi's most sought after diecast models. This model is large and heavy and is constructed using only the minimal amount of plastic. The series includes early variants with subtle differences, such as a fueling probe and clipped tail fin. Later variants have a completely different wing, larger ventral fuel tank with an integrated twin cannon pack and simulated stainless-steel covering located forward. The canopy can be configured in the open or closed position and a separate photo-etched metal cockpit ladder is included with most releases.

I generally shy away from Corgi models because too often I have found them lacking some of the refined aspects I find in other lines. They do offer a few aircraft that I have always found interesting, especially this Cold War example that served in large numbers. My father was stationed in England during it''s heyday.I remember going to airshows and seeing this hot rod. It was truly an interceptor on very short legs, but it served with distinction in those very tense years, patrolling European skies as it was on guard against the Soviet threat.
As usual,Corgi does a nice job with the packaging. Everything was nice and secure. The model has a nice paint scheme with well researched markings. Panel lines are not over exaggerated. There is a pilot figure already in the jet with the option of displaying the model with the gear down or up in the flying mode. My preference is always with the gear down. I removed the gear doors so I could install the landing gear and discovered that the front gear did not fit tightly. I also noticed that the left main gear fit well but the right one didn''t quite have that same snug fit. When I thought I had finally got it right and flipped the plane over right side up in preparation to sit it on it''s gear, the front assembly fell of and the right main collapsed. I did not want to use glue so I used some paper I found at a hobby shop to tighten the front assembly around the edges. Same thing with the right main. When I placed the model on it''s gear, it sat on it''s tail. After this I decided to display it in flying mode with the gear down. My understanding was that Corgi had fixed this problem of being tail heavy. I guess not. Though I''m disappointed I couldn''t display it the way I had intended, it is still a nice model. It is also a very heavy model which makes me very happy that it has a sturdy stand for the flight mode.
As far as some of the other detail, it is equipped with a pitot tube, aerial refueling connection and what I believe are two Sky Flash air to air missiles. There is absolutely no cockpit detail.Other lines are able to produce,to some extent, cockpit detail.
As far as collecting goes, Corgi confirmed again why it has been left behind by some of the new comers. It is always a plus to have collectors in the manufacturing process because most are connected with other collectors and are hearing what is on the wish list and what the expectation is for the money we spend on this hobby.
So my final verdict is that I have added an aircraft that you can''t buy from another line. It is not in the same league with the CenturyWings or HobbyMaster releases, but it does help me in trying to acquire at least one each of some of my favorite aircraft. Looking at the model brings back great memories of a great Hot Rod.
