Designed by Hawker Siddley (prior to their acquisition by British Aerospace) as a V/STOL (Vertical/Short Take-off and Landing) attack aircraft, the P.1127 "Kestrel" was first flown on October 21st, 1960 and after much refinement was redesignated "Harrier" and first flown on August 31st, 1966.
